Victory For Musicians Traveling With Instruments
The FAA Enacts Rule Updating Carry-On Guidelines
WHAT IT IS: The Federal Aviation Administration has finalized clear and consistent rules for travelers boarding commercial flights with musical instruments. These new guidelines go into effect for all airlines on March 6, 2015.
The Recording Academy and other stakeholders began the campaign several years ago to have Congress address this issue. Following the 2012 GRAMMYs on the Hill Advocacy Day, Congress passed the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Modernization and Reform Act of 2012. Lobbying efforts continued to have the FAA issue rules to implement the law in 2014.
On July 9, 2014, representatives of The Recording Academy participated in a meeting of stakeholders at the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) to push for regulations to be officially issued by the agency. Good news came on December 29 when USDOT issued the final rule.
WHY IT MATTERS: Traveling musicians can now be assured that if they plan to board a flight with their instrument, they will be accommodated as long as the instrument meets certain size and safety regulations. They will no longer be faced with a patchwork of inconsistent and changeable policies at boarding gates about whether they will be allowed to carry on. This will alleviate guesswork and frustration for musicians, who in the past were often subject to forced gate-checks and the prospect of damage or loss of their instrument.
